A modem on the network is always dialling out by itself and the only way to
stop it, is to switch off the computers.
What should I be looking for?

Many thanks from a novice!

Off the top of my head...

- an application
- a worm
- a root kit
- spyware

When it dials out, does it connect?

Roland,

They say it doesn't connect to anything. Just got of the phone and she said
it seemed to happen as soon as they started to use any of the machines. When
the network is first switched on, there is no activity until someone starts
using any one of the machines. As long as anyone is using any machine the
connecting activity continues.

Regards,

Colin

Sounds like the person has an entry in DUN and it is set to dial on demand.

You're probably right saying it's set dial-on demand. Isn't how you have to set it if you want to allow "sharing internet connection" ? That's what I've done on a small network and the modem dials every 5 seconds. And my four computers are proven to be virus free....Can you explain what's happening

If it's set to dial on demand, then any packet that doesn't have a target
for the local subnet will cause it to dial. This could be from an installed
service, like Windows updates, NAV LiveUpdate, browser homepage, etc.
