Network and antivirus software

I've just networked my kids' computer to mine, and I need to doublecheck
about antivirus protection. I use Trend Micro's antivirus software on my
computer. The instant I completed the network and had the kids' computer
online, I went to Trend Micro's web site to download the program for their
computer too, but then I wondered -- does the network share the antivirus
software from my computer as it shares the internet connection, or must I
have separate programs running on each computer in the network? My
assumption is that each computer must run its own copy of the program, but
networking is a new and unfamiliar world to me. I'm prepared to pay for the
software for the second computer, but I don't want to duplicate it if, in my
ignorance of networks, I don't really need it. The kids' computer will
remain turned off for now -- thanks in advance for your advice!

If the soft is on your computer and you are the networkmanager than
you can scan your kid's computer from yours - but if it's wireless,..
it's rather slow.

Personally I don't feel safe with that... I want an antivirus on each
machine + a firewall... even if I have a firewall one on my router...

I have a similar setup (my pentium4 cabled to the high speed router
and the kids's Pentium2 PC wireless on the router.
I use Norton on my Pentium4 (Norton + firewall) and Pandasoftware
platinum on my Kid's computer. Panda is better on a PC with little
resources.

Of cource if you are happy with Trend,.. you can keep it.
That's up to you.

My construction allows me to scan (slowly) the other PC in case of
doubt... as you know... virussen/worms change fast lately... 24 hours
not updated can be harmfull these days ;-)

I did once read that Norton allows 2 users for each payment... but
that has not been confirmed. I have a pal who uses 1 Panda account for
both his computers... butPanda does not allow it as far as I know,..
though it works...

Anyway,.. I teached my kids (12 & 14) to clean up their pc on a
regular basis with Ad Aware & Be Clean - Installed Bugnosis in their
Explorer so they see when there are bugs on webpages and Spyguard to
block their start page & avoid Hijackers.

No, I did not install a net nanny,... I believe that thay must learn
to surf intelligently,... but they know that I obviously can keep an
eye on the results of their activities when I clean their system...
So once a month I perform a cleaning with Spybot, registry cleaning,
aso...

Antivirus is only one protection for one problem... check out my pages
and find protection (mostly free) against spyware, malware, about
registry & system cleaning aso...

if you only use 'scan once a week' (or whenever) then one copy can scan
the whole network. If you use 'real time scan' (scan whenever a file is
opened, saved, etc.) and E-mail / web page scanning, then the second
computer should probably have a copy too (depending on how, exactly, you
share the wen connection it might not be strictly necessary for
email/WWW access).

If you're using PcCillin, I believe there is a 'second PC at reduced
rate' option (check their web site). PcCillin isn't real
network-friendly, in that both copies will download and install any
released updates .. not a problem unless you are on pay-per-minute
dial-up.
