Hi, I have two computers running win xp pro and am trying to set up
simple file sharing (fat32). On each computer I can ping its name
but not the other address. I get a request timed out message which
may indicate there is a network. OTOH, when rebooting one computer1
the network adaptor shows up in devices with a yellow exclamation !

I reinstall and it reads enabled but no network is established. So
I'm wondering if this is some kind of IRQ conflict between the bios
and the OS or a bad Nic card. I don't see a good reason to buy a
new Nic card if it is some type of channel conflict. The IRQ is 10
and I not sure how to find out if it is shared by several devices.

Regards,
Stephen

Did you set shared file permissions?

I enabled File and Printer sharing and shared both drives.
This is the fat32 Workgroup simple file sharing, and not the
more robust networking which is available if I had formatted
the drives with NTFS. The printer is also shared. I only
see computer name and its share on Network Connections
(and the printer on one computer) respectively-no ping of
the other computer works. Also have Qos and TCP-IP
and Client for MS installed. I looked at the resources
under device manager/view and saw no duplications.
I've tried this with the Networking wizard and manually.

How are you connecting the two computers? If you are just using a
single cable between the two cards it needs to be a cross-over cable not
the normal patch cable. What you are describing is that the computers
are not able to see any of the network outside of the computer.

Thanks, it turned out that the nic card needed replacement.
