I just bought a new computer. It has a Asus p4s533-mx
motherboard with an integrated ethernet adapter.
Sis 900-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

The adapter seems to work properly in device manager. When
I try to enable a local area connection I get the
following message: "network cable unpluged". (the cable is
pluged in of course)

Does any one know a work around or how I can fix this
problem.

Please mail the answer to the above mail address.

A few basic troubleshooting suggestions -

1) Test the adapter by pinging loopback: Start - Run - cmd
to get to a command prompt. Type "ping 127.0.0.1" (without
the quotes) and press Enter. You should get a response
that says (among other things) "Reply from 127.0.0.1:
bytes=32 time" and so on, repeated four times. If you get
any other result, there is something wrong with the
adapter.

2) Try a different cable. If possible, try a cable that
you know is working to connect a different system to your
network.

3) Try a different port on your concentrator. (If you're
trying a "known good" cable, you may as well leave it in
the concentrator port it was already using.)

Hope this helps to pin down where the point of failure is
exactly.

Oh yes, a detail I left out of my earlier post - after you
ping loopback, you close the command prompt session by
typing "exit" (again no quotes) and pressing enter.

It could be cross-over cable instead of the straight one or vice versa. Also
it could be link speed & duplex mismatch between NIC and
hub/switch/router/modem.
