Netware connectivity with 2 Nics on Win2Kpro

After installing 2 NICS on a Win2Kpro machine , Novell client refuses to see
the Novel NW3.12 server. One NIC is connected to an ADSL router/modem and the
other one is connected to our novell nw3.12 network. The NW3.12 server
displays an error message saying
"router at node <node adress> claims network 0002 should be 0001"
It seems that both NICs are linked and acts as a router and that Netware
complains about IPX network number.

No it is not acting as a router. It is now using the wrong nic after you
added the second Nic.

1. Set the correct Nic to the top priority. Network Places-->Advanced[top
menu]-->Advanced Settings...[dropdown menu]. It should be obivous what to
do in the upper dialog at that point.

2. Remove IPX/SPX from the Nic that is not being used with the Novel system.

3. After #one and #two are done,...if you have to,...change the IPX Network
number to what the thing wants it to be so it is happy.

Hello,

thanks for your reply.

The problem is, the two Nics are linked. And if i try to remove a protocol
from a card (or the novell client), it is also removed on the other. Is there
a way to make them act independantly ?

What in the world is "linked"?

I mean that if i remove ipx/spx on one nic it is also automaticaly removed on
the other.

I have set the top priority to the correct Nic and changed the IPX network
number
according to the novell server but there's still no connection.

You don't need to uninstall the protocol, just "uncheck" the box for it in
the properties for that nic.

Hi,

Sorry i wasn't clear enough. I didn't uninstall the protocols, I just
unchecked them
in the properties (i wanted to have IPX on the novell side only).

here are the two nics specifications:
Compaq NC3121 PCI (on the ADSL modem side)
- TCP/IP : 192.168.1.1
- IPX/SPX (this one i want to unbind)
- Novell client 4.91 (this one i want to unbind too)

3com Etherlink III ISA 3c905b-tp (on the novell network side)
- TCP/IP : 193.47.11.5
- Novell client 4.91
- IPX/SPX

I hope this informations helps.

I don't know what to tell you. I have never heard of that happening. The
whole reason that checkbox is there is so you can disable it on one Nic but
still keep it on another,...otherwise you would just uninstall/install
protocols globally.

1) undo the binding for the card that won't be using IPX/SPX. This is much
different that uninstalling the protocol or unchecking it in the network
stack.
2) Make sure your frame type is the same on both sides. MS's default IPX
frame type is different than Novell's default frame type.
3) consider installing the NLM for TCP/IP on the novell server so you can
get rid of ipx/spx.
4) This kind of setup is going to burn a lot of bindry licenses, so you'll
want to consider at minimum an upgrade to Novell 4.x (which will use a tree
structure that (a) is license friendly, and (b) is something that MS
understands a LOT better).
