Hello All,
Have a laptop and pc networked via an adsl router. Cannot get the pc to print. The printer is connected to the laptop. Have installed the printer software to the pc and followed the wizard.
Can you help?

Peahouse, it is good that you start a new thread with a new 'problem' but you still need to offer more information to all readers ... like, what is the Laptop, what is the PC and what is the printer ... and ... what OS are each of the systems using.

Obvious answer at the moment is, have you "shared" the printer? :)

Dear All,
Have networked a Toshiba laptop, Pentium4, 2.8GHz,1GB RAM, 30GB HDD, XP SP2 to an old Packard Bell PC, Cyrix 300MHz, 64MB RAM, 3.2GB HDD, WIN 98. The router is a SWEEX adsl+4-port switch. The machines share an Internet connection ok and both can send emails, but only one receives. I have installed the printer driver on the PC and tried the IP address of both the router and the one it allocated to the laptop in turn. Both failed with message 'could not connect to (IP address), port 515'.
The printer is set up for sharing on both but connected to the laptop. I have used the 'peer-to-peer' option as I didn't think the router worked as a print server.
Thanks in anticipation,

No printer is a network printer unles sold as such ... so you have to cheat a little. Sounds to me as you are trying to "network" your printer and all you really need to do is "share" it. ;)

It should be a simple matter setting up the printer ... make sure the printer is set-up and working on the PC/laptop and is also shared ... then ... just "add" a printer to the PC/laptop that has non ... tell the "wizard" you are on a "network" and it should then "see" and ask for the CD to install the printer.

Hi,
Trying to be logical. Uninstalled printer and driver on old pc. Checked again that it was 'ready' on laptop. Went to 'add printer' on old pc and chose 'network printer' in wizard. In 'network path' tried printer name 'brother' and name of network 'home'. It says the printer is offline in both cases.
Thanks,

You can thank MS for the incompatibility between OSs ... even XP Home & XP Pro have problems communicating over a network.

Sorry peahouse, but I have no answers either. :(

Hi,
I think I will try with my 'newer' old pc which has xp, just to check it is nothing I am doinng with the printer and network.
I have wired rj45 sockets today so the whole thing is now much neater - no trailing cables. The sockets were easy with a punch-down tool. Plugs were easier when I stripped the cable much too long and pulled the conductors straight, grip between thumb and first finger, trim a bit longer than recommended, insert to plug and crimp.
Cheers,
