My brother and I are just getting started with Netmeeting.
He is in Ireland. I'm in England. We both both have High
spec Laptops with good webcams and mics.. We can both run
the program fine but we can't speak to one another. Each
time we try the machine says "can't find the person
called in the MS internet directory server..." (We are
both on MSN where we can see one another fine but don't
get any audio..) Can anyone tell us if they've had this
problem..or is there another step involved in being in a
directory.
Both really confused and would appreciate any help,
Regards.

http://www.meetingbywire.com/NetMeeting101.htm has information on making
calls with NetMeeting.

Generally there are four strategies:

1) register in an ILS server and have people call using the ILS ( the
Microsoft Internet Directory is not an ILS -- in fact it provides no service
at all even when it is running). http://www.netmeetinghq.com lists third
party servers
2) call directly by exchanging IP addresses and using the IP address as the
calling address
3) initiate a call using Messenger ( I think though that MS has removed
NetMeeting calling features from Msn Messenger 6) -- other IM products ( ICQ
etc may also have NetMeeting call features).
4) use a web based directory service ( like
http://www.fresh-toast.uklinux.net/netmeeting/index.html)

Users behind NATs ( firewalls, router, some dsl modems) will have lessened
capability ( no incoming calls, often no incoming audio/video on outgoing
calls) -- some of which may be alleviated with router configuration.
