Looking for some help on an error I've been getting in one
of my server's system log.

Registration of the DNS record '0cf66ba6-cc2d-4d69-9acd-
6ad54450cfa0._msdcs.Domainname.com. 600 IN CNAME dss-
servername.Domainname.com.' failed with the following
error:
DNS RR set that ought to exist, does not exist.

Running Windows 2000 SP4 with AD integrated DNS. I've
checked and the CNAME record is present and after looking
at Q article 284963 I've made sure the DNS server is
identified properly and that the system is set to allow
dynamic updates.

Any help would be appreciated.

That can be caused by specifying your ISP's DNS in your IP properties.

Thanks for the suggestion, however upon checking the only
DNS IP address I have listed is the DNS server's. I don't
have any external IP listed. Thanks though.

Any other thoughts

Usually the ISP thing causes this. Other factors can also cause it.

Post an unedited ipconfig /all and the actual AD DNS domain name (as it
shows up in ADUC). That will give us a better start in diagnosing it for
you.

Hello all in this thread,

I did not find the starting message but some days ago I searched thsi group
for same problem and found the message, that my DNS-Entry for the
networksettings should not point to my ISPs DNS. I have set this entry back
to the server itself, who is acting as PDC with active DIrectory. Now all
this netlogon events no longer are entered.

Now my question:
my 2nd DNS in the network settings is the DSL-Router suppling the connection
to my ISP. The server needs for some reason internet access. My tests fail,
if the DSL-Router's IP is not the 1st DNS-entry in the server's network
settings. WIth AD integrated zones however, there is no possibility to enter
a forwarder. What can I do?

You should ONLY have the server listed for DNS on the NIC in TCP/IP
properties, no external or ISP's DNS in any position.
For internet access you can optionally use your ISP's DSN as a forwarder. If
the Forwarder option is grayed out on the forwarders tab, delete the Root
"." Forward lookup zone, refresh the DNS console or close and reopen then
you can define a forwarder on the forwarder tab.
