netgear RP114 ROUTER / 2k sp4 / GRE / VPN PROBLEM

Hi,

I have a pptp vpn connection that has been working for 2 years. When
upgrading windows 2000 clinets to sp4 (and xp sp1) and server to sp4, I can
only connect 10% of the time.

Apparently the netgear router RP114 may not support GRE pass through (not
confirmed). If this is the case:

1. why would it work 10% of the time ? (ie if gre is confirmed by another
pptp connection within router ?)
2. why has it been working pre SP4 (i.e for 2 years) ?
3. what has sp4 changed ?

Thanks
Scott.

GRE works or VPN would never work, ever.

What changed in SP4 is the VPN client tries L2TP first and the process may
time out before it has a chance to successfully make a PPTP connection.
Try this:

1. On each client computer, click "Start", point to "Settings", point
to "Network and Dial-up Connections", right-click the remote access
connection, and then click "Properties".

2. Click the "Networking" tab.

3. In the "Type of VPN server I am calling" list, click "Point to Point
Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)", and then click "OK".

I changed 2k clinet to use PPTP only (i.e not automatic) 98 didnt give me
the option as only PPP available.

Again today 98 and 2000 on extrenal ip 1 cant connect.
Last night 98 on external ip connected and manually disconnected 3 times.

I dont understand what is causing this intermitant failure. the IIS and FTP
serviecs hosted on this connection have been fine.

thanks for any advice.
scott.
