Netbios

We have a windows 2003 server based network with solely windows xp clients.
Because of the fact that netbios isnt used by any network application, I had
netbios resolution disabled. Everything seemed to work fine, till four pc's
started to have problems with group policy processing. The event log showed
an 5719 netlogon error and this was the reason why gp hadnt processed. This
error would occur most of the time, but sometimes it didnt appear and gp
processing went well.

After trying a lot to remedy the problem I tried reinstating netbios and
voila: problem solved. Does anybody know why this occurs when netbios is
disabled? It seems odd to me that it also only occurs on those four machines,
which are identical by the way. I thought that netbios became obsolete when
windows 2003 is used in combination with 2000 or xp clients.

Thank you in advance,

Rene

See if any of the following is of help:

You'd think so, but unfortunately it just works better if you leave
netbios turned on. In the tcp/ip prop page, advanced button, wins tab,
choose "default - automatic", which basically turns netbios on 99% of the
time.

W/ netbios on, browsing for computers in network neighborhood works MUCH
better/faster, and resolving net resources in general is much more
reliable. The computer browser service also has a much easier time
maintaining its list of "nearby peers".

The main "flaw" w/ netbios is its complete lack of security, it'll respond
to anyone asking; as long as your internet gateway router blocks incomming
netbios requests from outside the local net you'll be fine.
