Does anyone know why Netbios needs to be installed on some Windows XP machines and not others to access resources thru a VPN set up on a windows 2000 server?

Did you mean to say Netbeui? Netbios (over TCP/IP) is already there.

It should all work without Netbeui if your DNS and/or WINS is working
properly and you have a domain set up. It is tricky with workgroups.

Thanks for the reply Bill,
I recently had a problem with accessing resources on my windows 2000 server thru a VPN with XP Machines. When I installed NWLink IPX/SPX/Netbios on the Local area connection Ethernet adapter it solved my problem. I was just curious as why the VPN was working without it for months
Thanks

I would say it had been working through Netbios over TCP/IP. Why this
stopped working and needed IPX is a different matter!
