Hi there,

How safe and for what purposes it is to leave the
"enable netbios over tcpip" setting in TCPIP, Advanced, Wins tab on a W2K
server?
Should I disable it?
Thanks, Calin

You can have it enabled on your internal nic, disable it on the external
nic.

Hi Marina,

So even the firewall does not have a port opened for
netbios(135,137,138) the netbios still comes in through TCPIP, right and it
can be hacked?
Thanks a lot, Calin

If you are not using My Network Places to locate and share the server and
are using strictly dns then it may be something to consider. Netbios over
tcp/ip is extremely vulnerable if it is available to untrusted networks such
as the internet due to lack of a properly configured firewall. For a secured
network, disabling it results in reduced network traffic. See KB link below
for more info about and ramifications of. --- Steve
