I have a client upgrading from NT domain to 2003 domain.
His current NT domain name is "CLS" (company initials).
During the upgrade he wishes to set the active directory
DNS FQDN of "companyname.local", however, he wishes to
maintain the netbios name of "CLS" even though it is not
part of the FQDN. Is this permissible, and will it
present problems down the line.

THANKS!

You can set your NetBIOS domain name to whatever you want it will have no
effect on the win2k and newer clients. There are some issues with legacy
clients if the NetBIOS name is different from the DNS name, below is some
articles covering that issue.

Be aware, if this is an NT4 upgrade you must change the domain suffix in
TCP/IP properties to the DNS name of your Win2k domain before you upgrade
the NT4 PDC to Win2k, not doing so will cause a disjointed name space after
you run DCPROMO.

.
Thanks! What about the remaining NT 4.0 servers,
including BDC's, which will coexist with the W2003
servers until we upgrade them? They will also still be
using Exchange 5.5 on NT 4.0 for another month... Any
issues there?

rick.

This will not cause any problems.

Thank you,
