Netbios Domain Name

I have an old Win 2k Advanced Server. I have also
purchased a win XP Pro and in trying to connect the two
PCs, I used a linksys DSL router. I am able to ping each
computer from the other, and I am able to ping the router
form either computer. My problem is I cannot register the
XP with the 2k as a member of the domain.

The details of my eror mesage says the domain name might
be a Netbios domain name, verify that the name is
properly registered with WINS.

I have no idea how to find out if it is a netbios domain
name and if it is, how to register it in WINS. when I
looked at the WINS tab, it only allows for IP address. I
am running DHCP on my router....

Can someone please point me in the right direction. I
want to be able to share files and printer between the
two computers...

Thanks

The reason that the error is displayed is because name resolution failed.
It's warning you that if you are using an old NT4 like domain, you might
want to provide a Wins server (or enter appropriate lmhosts file entries to
resolve the Netbios name). This is not your case since you should be relying
on DNS name resolution between XP and a W2K domain. In other words, XP needs
the name resolution server's address to successfully resolve a domain DC.

The trick is to specify the DNS server's ip_address in XP's network
configuration. If you haven't a dns server running, add the W2K server's
ip_address to the XP HOSTS file. Log on to XP as a user already existing on
W2K domain (with the right to create a computer account on the domain).
etc...
