dudes and dudettes,

if you run net use in a pure win2k environment, presumeably, it still
needs to use WINS to get connections to resources not in its own local
broadcast subnet??

will netbios name resolution ever resort to DNS??

same applies for the 'Entire network' thing in explorer??

thanks in advance..

Brianos

net use will use DNS to locate host, but later it will use SMB directly over
TCP/IP - port 445 (if the client and server both support it) otherwise it
will use NetBIOS over TCP/IP, but network browsing is still and will always
be NetBIOS thing.

Thanks for your response Matzaj, much appreciated...

I assume then that using explorer and browsing the 'Entire network' is
then using the Master Browser and browse lists etc.. why does this
not use LDAP?? what would be the LDAP alternative, I guess running a
specific LDAP search??

Surely, explorer should be using LDAP and AD.

cheers, Brianos

LDAP is used when you use AD searches and lists all computers listed in your
AD weather they are live or not and works only on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003
clients (Win9x/Me don't have computer account in AD), because they have
computer account in AD. Network browsing list is Ad Hoc variant and it lists
only live workstations in your network (at least in the range of few
minutes). Don't think that there is much to do on this area. Network
browsing will eventually die sometime (not soon) :-) as it is considered a
legacy technology. This are two technologies and each has its plus and
minus.
