Does using Netbeui and NWlink Netbios in a wireless home network reduce your
security? I have a mixed home network (XP Home - Windows 98) and seem to
need them to successfully access a printer connected to a W98 desktop.

No. It will only consume resources. NetBEUI is a non-routable, tranport provided, NetBIOS
protocol and NWLink is Microsoft's version of IPX/SPX. Both are NOT protocols of the
Internet so they will not be targets of attacks, only TCP/IP is.

You would STILL have to secure the wireless access point to prevent "War Driving" type
hacking.

As for Win98, you could use ONLY NetBIOS over IP as the "only" protocol and WinXP and Win98
would happily share printers and data.

Thank you.
