Could some one please give me some back ground on this problem, both
symptoms and a fix. The problem is with a laptop which is not in my
possession. The issue arose after an update the sound is muted unless
speakers are plugged in. I have found a fix on the net but because I am not
hands on I am reluctant to advise a fix without being fully aware of the
issue.

Thanks

Let's see - you didn't tell us the make/model of the laptop, what the update
was, or what the "fix on the net" is. So how is anyone here to advise you
responsibly? We can't.

Look on the laptop mftr.'s support website or contact their tech support. If
the update was after a Windows Service Pack, possibly this is a known issue
and may be cured by updating the BIOS or drivers or the like.

But there is no way for anyone to tell you what to do in this instance.

Make Model is totally immaterial, it has affected many makes of PCs and
occurred recently after a Vista update.

It is not a hardware issue.

MS-MVP
That says it all. Heaven forbid that it could possibly be caused by the
infallible MS corporation.

OK... what about that "fix on the net" you found??

How do you know? WTH does "net stop beep fix" mean? None of my clients'
Vista laptops or desktops have any problems that could possibly be
connected to "net stop beep", whatever that means. I don't use Vista on a
laptop so I can't speak for myself. But if you want help, you need to
provide details.

HTH do you know? What troubleshooting have you already done?

It says nothing. You have said nothing. As for MS being infallible, well if
you think so. Me, I don't and therefore choose not to use Windows for my
personal computing.

Hopefully someone else will want to take the time to pull the details out of
you.

Good luck in solving your problems.
