Hi all. I use Win XP Home Edition and I am trying to get
the DOS command (NET SEND) to work.

Firstly you need is your ip address and you can get that
by typing ipconfig from the Command Prompt line. You are
then given your own IP address. Then you type in NET SEND
(YOUR IP ADDRESS) "hello renato etc ..." then press enter.

You are supposed to get a confirmation message on your
own screen showing your message and it was sent etc ...

BUT I am then presented with an error message "The
message alias could not be found on the network"

I went to the knpowledge base, and Microsoft are saying
that it is a problem with Windows 2000 and Win XP and to
wait for the next service pack. They then suggested a
work around and that is to make sure that "Terminal
Services" is "started" and set to "automatic" I did this
and it still does not work.

Microsoft say that there is a fix coming. I am wondering
if anyone has a copy of the fix or if they have come
across this before, and what was done to fix it.

I don't check newsgroups much, but if you can help,
please email me and put "NET SEND PROBLEMS" in the
subject line and I will be sure to see it. Email me on
(e-mail address removed) and Thanks in advance if you can
help. Chow. Signed Renato

Greetings Renato,

Terminal Services has nothing to do with this. If you've disabled the Messenger Service, you
won't be able to receive your own "net send" messages, or if your destination has disabled
the Messenger Service or has a firewall engaged (like the built-in Windows XP Internet
Connection Firewall) then they won't be able to receive them either.

To verify that the Messenger Service is started, click Start, then Run, type
"services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it, right-click and then
choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Automatic' and then choose the 'Start'
button. After the service is started, click OK.
