I just noticed that you can't send messages in Vista using the net send
command. Is there a reason this was taken out of Vista and maybe a work
around?

The recommendation from MS has been to disable this even in XP unless it is
absolutely critical. The problem is it has been used as an attack vector in
the past.

There are third party alternatives to net send. I haven't used any so can't
recommend one, but if you do a web search on vista net send you'll find
links to ones that you can try. Beyond that, you would need to post your
requirements around why you need net send, as opposed to other ways to send
messages, in order for a more specific recommendation.

It's not so much an attack vector, but rather, an annoyance. Even so,
it's a shame it was removed completely, rather then simply disabled by
default allowing environments which use this functionality to still do
so.

Heck, it could have even required administrative privileges for messages
to be processed to avoid abuse, while still allowing net admins to send
out "everybody get off the H: drive for an upgrade" type notices.

I used to use it to send messages to everyone that the Server was going down
for maintenance or things like that.
