lolly

I have been receiving an irritating bright orange .Net
Messenger alert informing me of an important security
update from .Net Messenger, first in an email, then in
message notifications. I don't use Messenger or .Net
Messenger, and have tried three things to stop it from
occurring ever time I log on to Explorer or Internet
Explorer.
1st I went to Computer management/Services& applications,
clicked on services, then scrolled down to messenger and
under the startup type I chose 'disable'
The problem still occurs

2nd, I ran this;
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%
\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

When the computer rebooted I got an error message telling
me that an integral part of Explorer was missing, thus
not allowing an internet connection. It gave me an
option to repair, which I did, and am now back online,
however the original problem is still happening.

3rd I unchecked msmsg/startup tab/ in msconfig. Still no
luck.

I am running Winxp Home Sp1/ IE 6 SP1

Any suggestions? Thanks for listening!

Greetings lolly,

What the error message informed you was that an integral part of *MSN* Explorer was
missing -- if you don't use MSN Explorer, you could probably ignore this message.

However, to avoid problems in the future (by removing or forcibly disabling Windows Messenger
will cause features like Remote Assistance to no longer function), simply install Windows
Messenger 5:

Hi there I am not sure of all the different computer
lingo, etc, but I do use Explorer..that's how I sign on
to the internet, but I hate the tool bar so I sign out of
that, then open Internet Explorer. When I ran that
particular command, I was not able to connect to the
internet, as Explorer is my way in. If I try to connect
using IE 6, it says working off line..would I like to
connect?..I choose yes, which brings up the MSN Explorer
sign in page.
I did go to their update page that was provided via a
link. I read the information provided and one of the
things that has me concerned was that by upgrading to
5.0, some of my IE 6 components may not work, or at least
that is one of their informational advisories.
Thank you so much for your quick reply.

is what I get when I click on the download page.

Hi lolly,

If you use MSN Explorer to connect (this assumes of
course you're a MSN subscriber), you
cannot remove Messenger as it's an integral part of MSN Explorer.

However, upgrading to Windows Messenger 5 will work fine
with Internet Explorer 6 (I'm not

Hi lolly,

You should be able to install Windows Messenger 5 without a problem (the only feature you'll
loose in MSN Explorer is seeing your online contacts via the 'Contacts' button in MSN
Explorer. If this feature is important to you, I'd recommend that you upgrade to MSN
Explorer 8.5:
http://client.msn.com/msn8/download/en/us/
which will use MSN Messenger 5 (or 6) instead of Windows Messenger.

If you do this you'll also probably want to disable Windows Messenger, you can do so by
opening it up, clicking the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences, uncheck 'Run this
program when Windows starts' prior to installing the new MSN Explorer.

Thanks, once again, Jonathan Kay. I did one additional
thing, I downloaded 'Shoot the Messenger' which, so far
(fingers crossed) seems to be working. I appreciate your
thorough answers.
