I have XP Home Edition and Windows Update tells me I need the .Net Framework.
I use the computer mostly for pleasure, reading, emailing friends, etc. Do I
really need to download and install this or will an application alert me when
I attempt to download that application I need to install the .Net Framework
for it to work properly? Thank you.

You only need .NET framework if you are using application that require it.
For example Office 2003 or some utilities like CleanCache.
Obviously .NET framework is being used a lot now in new applications but, if
you are not using these applications you don't need .NET framework.
Obviously if you haven't got it installed windows update will still offer it
for download - although it will not be automatically downloaded. The choice
is yours. Most applications will state in their doceumentation whether they
need .NET framework or not.

I searched the Microsoft website for ".net" because I am considering
using CleanCatch. While I found something called ".net" there did not
appear to be anything to download to allow a program that needs it to work.

Am I looking at the wrong ".net" ?

I don't recall seeing a ".net" offered on Windows Update but I could
look again.

Thanks!
I was searchine under ".net", when it appears I should have been
searching under ".net FRAMEWORK".

John,

You wrote <<You only need .NET framework if you are using application that

This may be needed if running those applications but that is not to say that
it is needed to run those applications - obviously so as I am running
Office2003. I have avoided this download as I am not sure what benefit /
disbenefit there is in either running with or without it. Also I don't want
to download something unnecessary.

I should appreciate it if you could clarify (in layman's terms) just what
are the benefits of installing .net framework and indeed the disbenefits in
not installing it.

Thanks.

Bill I agree. I would like to know more myself about the same items you do.
I'll be interested & will keep an eye on this forum.
