.NET Framework - what?

I don't recall installing this, but I've just noticed TWO entries in
Add/Remove Programs, plus a hotfix, as follows:

Program Name Registry Entry Name
------------------------------------------ ------------------------
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Microsoft .NET Framework
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 {CB2F7EDD-9D1F-43C1...
Microsoft .NET F..k 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903) M886903

I also found what I gather from research is an extra user account,
ASPNET. I can see this as one of 5 accounts when I enter:
Run 'control userpasswords2'

User name Group
----------- ------------------
Administrator Administrators
ASPNET Users
Basic Administrators; Users
Guest Guests
Terry Administrators

If I use Control Panel > User Accounts, I see only 3:

Basic Administrators; Users
Guest Guests
Terry Administrators

Q1: What is likely to have installed this Microsoft .NET Framework?
(Can I find out for sure?)
Q2: Why is it duplicated?
Q3: Is it safe to uninstall?
Q4: Will uninstalling remove the ASPNETR user account?
Q5: How would I remove that separately if necessary?

Much appreciate any practical advice please.

Thanks. I'm still unclear about the answers to my 5 questions though!

Re Q1, at that link I read "The aspnet_wp or ASP.NET Machine Account
is created when the Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1 is installed onto a
Windows XP computer. The user is created to run the asp.net worker
process used in Microsoft's Internet Information Services, which
allows ASP.net to run on your local web server (This is pretty much
its only use, it is not used to run normal .net managed executables).
There is not a need to worry about this user's presence; it was not
created in malicious way."

But, as mentioned in my post, I'm not aware of installing .Net
Framework 1.1. I was hoping someone here might know if there are some
common/likely ways in which it was indirectly added?

..Net Framework 1.1 most likely was installed
on one of your visits to the Windows Update site.
You probably just did not notice it in a group of
updates. You could go to the Windows Update
site and check your installation history.
Go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
On the left hand side, click on the "Review your update history" link

Bingo - thanks! Way back on 2nd Feb too. Summary says:

"Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 resolves various issues
found after the initial release of .NET Framework 1.1. These include
both security- and non-security-related issues. After you install this
item, you may have to restart your computer. Once you have installed
this item, it cannot be removed."

WONDERFULL - another piece of MS software that can't be uninstalled (which
is of course bullshit, they just don't want you to be able to). Same caveat
as updating DirectX, e.g. if it goes wrong chances are you're toast and time
to fresh install!.
