I'll soon be developing an application for the O2 XDAII
running Windows Mobile 2003, but I'm new to mobile
technology.
I want to use .NET, but I'm not sure if the .NET Compact
Framework is compatible - what IS Windows Mobile? Is it
just a kind of Windows CE.

Yes, the .NET Compact Framework is the way to go. I think Windows Mobile is
just a new name for Windows CE.

Not a new name, something like another platform reference for a particular
version of Windows CE, version 4.2
These devices already have the .net compact framework preinstalled on ROM,
but if you want to have the latest version, you must apply the SP2.

Alberto Silva

Actually it's the name for the Pocket PC (and smartphone I think)
adaptations of CE 4.2. Vanilla CE 4.2 is still called CE .NET

"Windows Mobile" is the new brand name that is used to group Smartphone and
Pocket PC OS's. Its a bit like the way "Microsoft Windows" is used to talk
about many versions of windows.

So "Windows Mobile 2003" refers to Pocket PC 2003 and Smartphone 2003 OS's.
