Not sure, but it may be "liteware". I think it may be missing a feature or
2.

Looks like the pressure from Freeware such as MyIE2 and Avant forced them to
go Freeware with it.

Last time I used NC, it was the best. MyIE2 evolved and passed it in
features, but not by much.

Hmmm... I don't see any sponsored links. Oh well... I don't mind.
:)

Well, I see the ads when search.netcaptor.com isn't placed in my HOSTS
file...otherwise I don't see it. *shrugs*

Coolio! :)

My Hosts file is getting bloated. I stuff it with popups ad URL's every time
something gets through.

Just a note from the site:

"NetCaptor requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0+ to be installed on the
computer. NetCaptor runs under Windows 98, NT4, ME, 2000 and XP and requires
that IE is installed (though you don't have to use it)."

Yes. All IE browser shells require IE.

That is apparently so ... but can't understand why, for the life of me.
Just p-r-e-c-i-s-e-l-y what IS it about MSIE that other browsers need
before they will work? Filename recognition? Certain .DLL files?
Inquiring minds would like to know.

Good question LP. AFAIK, it's mainly operating system files. If you wish to
explore this further, there's a program called 98 lite and XP lite that
hacks those files out. (Sorry, it's not Freeware). I bet you could load the
Shareware trial version and find lots of documentation on the exact files
that only IE needs. I suppose there are many shared files that can not be
removed.

Certain DLLs, essential. The iexplore.exe is just another little exec that
hosts the MS Browser Control (those DLLs and their relations). MSDN speaks
pretty in depth about it...

A good basic intro, are the first paragraphs on this page

Must be a anniversary edition.
NetCaptor 6.5.0 RC1 was first one.
I've migrated to Moz & Firebird almost completely. (99.5%)

Nothing lite on this one.

??? If we are talking about Ie shells, the HTML rendering engine for
one.

You do know that by using a IE shell, MSIE is doing the real work of
displaying html? Your beloved IE shells just add some new extensions and
features, but don't fool yourself ,without IE, IE shells would be as
useful as a car without an engine. It would have nice seats, but it
wouldn't go anywhere.

This certainly isn't a case, for other real alternative browsers of
course, which can work perfectly well without IE.

Aaron (my email is not munged!)

Dl'ed and tried, just to take a peek. Says it supports the
googlebar, but the option to use it was greyed out. I even re-
installed the googlebar but the option remained greyed out. Maybe
that's the "liteness" of it? Anyway...uninstalled and forgotten.

Google bar. What a waste. One all-purpose bar is enough for me.

So what?

I have Donut, Networker, Scope. All _depend_ on the Moz Browser Control
(mozctlx.dll). The second two can switch-hit, and use also the MS Browser
Control (incl, shdocvw.dll, mshtml.dll, wininet.dll).

Moz developers are working on developing the Moz Browser Control to
support other apps hosting it more widely, which will be nice, but
they haven't yet had time to work on that goal as long as MSFT.

Also true for most of the RTF editors. They depend on MSFT's rich edit
controls to do anything. There are third-party richedit controls (which
might even be superior) -- but most RTF editors use those provided with
the Windows OS. Again, so what.

Hmm...Google Bar wasn't installed here, which caused the toolbar to be
gray. Upon installing it, though, Googlebar is no longer greyed, and
works as expected.

Oh, and for the record, I prefer the keyword approach to the toolbar
approach. Just type "g blah" in the address bar to Google search for
blah, "gg blah" for a Google Groups search, etc.

That's what I said. That's the very definition of a shell.

What alternatives? ;)

Quit trying to shove moz this and moz that down my throat. It's not ready
for prime time yet. (Though I must admit it's very pretty, and getting
reliable)

Merry Christmas to all!

I just have to laugh at this. Too funny.
