Net breaks One Way...?

Howdy,

We have six Win 2000 systems on our LAN, and have an odd
problem with one of them.

When we boot up that system, it comes up on the network
properly, but...

After a while (and I don't know how long it takes) that
system fails to see others, but others can see it.

So, when I return to the office in the morning, that one
system is always in that state: Others see it, but it can't
see "out."

I have looked at it's NIC's power saving settings, and they
are OFF.

At the suggestion of the folks at Dell, I have re-installed
the NIC driver (and re-checked the power saving settings) so
far to no avail.

Can you think of anything else that could cause this?

Very sincere thanks,

what's the result of ipconfig? Can you ping other computer by IP?

Hi Bob,

IPCONFIG looks fine on the offending machine, but I have not
tried pinging out. I will do that, and let you know.

Thanks,

Hi again Bob,

Well, it took several hours to die (as always), but now that
the lan access is broken, here is what I have learned:

All machines can browse the offending machine successfully.

From the offending machine, I can ping all other systems by
IP address, or by name (and that last surprised me.)

But from the offending machine, I cannot access Internet,
and if I attempt to browse any other machine, I get the
error:

"MachineName Not Accessible. Network Path Not Found."

Also, as I may have mentioned, I know that re-booting the
system in question will correct the problem (until it breaks
itself.)

One other thing I will add:

It seems that working on the system serves some sort of
"keep-alive" function with regard to network access. That is
to say that I do not remember ever working on the machine
when traveling (it's a laptop) and having the network access
be lost while I am working. If, however, I leave the machine
idle for a few hours and return to work on it, I very
frequently find that the net access has been lost in the
interim. At that point, I re-boot, and continue...

So, that's the status right now, and I look forward to
anything further you might suggest,

You said you are able to ping everything but not browse. Thats not a network
connectivity problem then. I would call this an eccentric ghostly problem. :-)
Do testing for a week, use some third party keep alive utilities and see if
problem persists.

Hi Bob, Nimit, and others,

I eventually decided to run a Windows Repair...

It was a bit of a hassle, but now, the problem is resolved.

Hello again,

Well, I spoke (or clicked) too soon...

For the first day, all was well, but now, the problem has
returned:

After running a complete Win 2000 Repair I was at SP2. I
then ran a ton of updates and got back to SP4.

But now, as before, if I leave the machine on, but unused
for many hours, it loses the ability to browse others on our
lan though they can browse it. It also cannot see the
Internet.

It can, however, ping other machines on our lan by name, or
by IP address.

Might anyone have further suggestions?

Sincere thanks,
