Hi,

I'd like to find some information about .NET and the features it provides.
I have a requirement to develop a distributed application but need to know
about .NET. Also training is not an option as I have been instructed to
first decide an area of .NET before finding training. But I dont know what
parts of .NET we will be using to be able to pick a course.

Ideally I'd like to find someone who would come in for a day to describe
what you would use each of the various aspects of .NET.

Do MS do that?

Any help would be appreciated.

As far as consulting goes, you can get MS or any number of people in for a
day, if the money is there. I have run half day and one day seminars in my
area to get people started with .NET. While I have run completely impromptu,
I prefer to determine what the client wants to accomplish (a couple of
vision/scope statements, et al) and tailor some info in that direction.

From the UseNet standpoint, you can likely get some guidance on where to go
if you will state what you build now and what your company wants you to
build in the future.

The first place to start would be the home page for UK:
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/default.asp

The about page has a couple of office listed:
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/about/

You will want to ask about any seminars they hold, as well as whether or not
they can get an MCS (Microsoft Consulting Services) person to your location.
The events page is where I go for US events. The UK events search is here:
http://www.microsoft.co.uk/events/msehome.asp

Also look at the webcasts and chats. Here are a couple of great links (the
past events may have what you are looking for, so examine them) -- great
free resource to get started.

http://www.microsoft.com/usa/webcasts/upcoming/default.asp - Webcasts:
Requires Interwise client
http://msdn.microsoft.com/chats/ - Technical chats
http://msdn.microsoft.com/training/seminars/ - Online Seminars (great
streaming content on a variety of topics)
http://msdn.microsoft.com/training/webcasts/ - MSDN webcasts
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/webcasts/ - Support webcasts
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/chats/default.mspx - Other chats

I generally spend a few hours a week listening to webcasts while working. If
the topic is particularly compelling, I will go back later and revisit the
webcast in the archive (where available).
