.NET, and on-the-fly backup apps

I'm trying to install under Vista Ultimate x64 one of those on-the-fly
backup programs (Western Digital Backup Anwhere, or R4Yware Clonedir2), but
they just won't run... I suspect this has sth to do with the .NET; I googled
and saw a mention somewhere that under x64 systems, they require .NET 3.5.

So I downloaded and installed .Net 3.5 - to no avail... In the Vista
components, .NET 3.0 is still listed (while in the Program List in Control
Panel, only the new 3.5 version is present). I don't think my installation
actually changed anything in the system.

Can anyone help? Or does another on-the-fly backup program exist that is
compatible with Vusta x64?

If the solution is not running, then it may have put out an error message or
even dumped a message into the System or Application event log.

If the .Net solution was built using framework 3.5, then the solution knows
how to find the 3.5 framework and use it. There can be multiple .Net
solutions installed on the computer that use different versions of the .Net
Framework that have been installed on the machine.

I suggest that you get on the phone or make contact with Western Digital
about the issues.

Both the apps when started cause Vista display the message:

"App_name stopped working... Windows is looking for a solution to the
problem..." (or anything to that effect; of course no solution is found)

Thanks for this explanation - but my doubts are based on the remark on the
Microsoft download page for .NET 3.5, that I should remove .NET 3.0 before
installing the 3.5. How do I remove .NET 3.0, when - being a part of Vista -
it isn't even listed in Control Panel -> Programs & Features?

I did. All they had to say was: so far, WD Anywhere Backup is not supported
under Vista x64. They don't even know when (or IF) it will ever be!

Something in the solution is not compatible with Vista x64 and the
application is terminating. This has nothing to do with .Net and the .Net
Framework.

I have them both on my machine, as I am a .Net solutions developer
professionally. It's not causing any problems. The only thing the download
site for 3.5 indicates is to un-install other pre/bata releases of the 3.5
framework. It's not talking about un-installing 3.0, 2.0. 1.1 or 1.0 if they
are on the machine.

Well, if they have told you that, then why are you trying to beat a dead
horse? Whatever you're trying to do on your own to pull the rabit out of the
hat is not going to work on x64.

I guess you're right with regard to the WD solution - but the other
application I mention (also on-the-fly, background backup) is SAID to work
under x64, provided .NET 3.5 is installed - yet it doesn't here, hence my
seeking help :)

BTW, I just installed the Acronis True Image Home trial, and - while working
under both my OS'es - it doesn't offer the on-the-fly (i.e. right after a
file is modified) functionality...

Well, you'll need to make contact with the verdor's tech support, as to why
said application is not working while running on Vista.

I have a 250gb portable usb drive that I use if I need to back up anything.
I just copy it there.

Carbonite is one that offers on the fly backup, whether it works with x64 I
couldnt say, but on my winxp sys there was a conflict with other software so
I coul'nt use it.
