Nero 9 install problems

I know this is not hardware, but you guys know how to fix things. I
bought Nero 9 a few months ago and it installed okay. I just
installed the latest update and it seemed also to install, and I went
ahead with other things. Then, a minute later, a message box popped
up telling me that it didn't install properly, to download and run the
Nero clean program, reboot and reinstall. I did, after downloading
the full program, and the unpacking fails at 63% telling me it can't
find its own setupx program, which I assume should be loaded as part
of the unpacking. I've cleaned and retried several times, using all
versions of the Nero installer, but it always fails at that 63%. Any
ideas?

Since it's a 'new' update to Nero it could be that it may have its own bug,
Try Nero support and give them a shot at the problem. They may know
instantly what the difficulty is and be able to correct it for you. I ran
into almost this exact situation when installing an update for Nero 7 a few
years ago. About a week later Nero came out with an updated version of the
update which allowed installation. Or maybe it's required to do a morrisjig
for good luck during installation to get a smooth finale.

Thanks, Jan. Now I've got the earlier version installed I'll contact
them.

Yes, get rid of it. There are freeware apps that I've found far more
reliable, far less bloated, and of course legally free. Nero is one
app I wasted too much time on.

Now you've got my interest. What freeware programs have you found that work
better than Nero for burning and versatility for adding data copying CDs,
DVDs, making ISOs and an occasional slide show? I'm currently using Nero 7.

InfraRecorder and ImgBurn get good ratings on Softpedia; the latter is
rather complex but can do a lot.

There's also the free version of Ashampoo; that seems to be along the lines
of Nero without so much bloat(?).

I like software that isn't bloated, and that means one job one app,
not one app for 1000 jobs. For the above except slideshows, I like
Deepburner. Its no nonsense, does what it says, its easy to use, and
is as stable and reliable as they get.

But as ever tastes vary, best place to ask for more options would be
alt.comp.freeware.

Have a link/name going with your freeware? :)

Many thanks to Peter, Scott and NT for their suggestions. I'm sure I can get
myself into some minor trouble before I find something that fits better than
Nero 7.

For those of you who do have problems with Nero 9, it needs a program
called 7zip to be installed (similar in function to WinZip but with a
different algorithm), and also a program called neroextractor.exe
which is extracted from neroextractor.zip using 7zip. You then drop
the Nero install file onto the extractor, and voila.
