so I went to download java in order to view a "live"
auction and it tells me I need the "virtual machine"
update installed... but I cant find it among the
essential windows updatesor the others (23) that are
available. How do I do it? Thanks.

ARE YOU MAD! You have 23 updates available??? Stop
procrastinating and download and install them! ALL of
them! Should work then.

Den,

You should peruse these groups, and do some reading before you answer
questions that you don't know the answer to.

Windows XP does not ship with the Java Virtual Machine installed, and unless
the user was originally able to install version 3805 or 3809, when it WAS
available from Windows Update, they will not be able to install the 3810
update. It will not even be presented as an option, since they don't have
the MS Java VM to update.

Steve,

You will have to locate and install the Java VM, 3805 build. You can
search on Google for "ms java vm 3805" (without the quotes)and find a number
of download links. Just make sure you're downloading the XP version. Then
you can go to Windows Update and install the 3810 build, to make sure you've
got all the security updates for it.
