Is there a way in Excel I can enter hour/minute values as
negative and therefore perform calculations on these
figures? I am developing a timesheet which records users
flextime (negative and positive values). I have used the
inbuilt [h]:mm function, and tried to edit it to allow for
negative values, without success.

You can change the date format to the 1904 system under
tools>options>calculation,
that will allow you to do that. The catch is that all dates in the workbook
will have
146 days added to them, so if you do that you need to put 1462 in a cell,
copy it, select
the dates and do edit>paste special and select subtract to get the dates
back on track again.
Another way would be to decimal hours and for negative two houlrs use -2
than when you subtract it from
a positive time value do as follows, with the -2 in C6 and 14:00 in B6

=B6+(C6/24)

Thank you. I used the 1904 system and all my formulas are
calculating correctly now. The only issue I have now is
that I want a user to be able to enter a negative
hour/minute value to enable the spreadsheet to calculate
flextime credit/debit. At the moment, the user receives
an error when entering an actual negative value. Any way
to get around this?

Thanks

I know. You have to teach them to use something like

=-"08:00"

for -08:00
