I want to make a PPT slide with a solid black background
using various transparent shapes such as an ovals,squares
and rectangles. The objective is to be able to include
one, two or more photos on one slide.
 
You can do that. What do you need help with? Add your square and right click
it and select Format Autoshape. On the Colors and Lines tab, click the arrow
next to the Color box. Select Fill Effects from the drop down menu and click on
the Picture tab. Select your picture file and OK your way out.

Hello,

You could use the Photo Album to create a variety of sets of slides
(different shapes, different numbers of photos per slide, etc.). Then you
could use the Default design for each presentation and the color scheme
iniluded with that design which has a black background and then combine the
slides into a single presentation. You could then go through the
presentation to adjust the shape of photos individually using the Change
Autoshape command.

The Photo Album feature is built-in to PowerPoint 2002 and 2003 and is
available for PowerPoint 2000 as a downloadable add-in.
