Dos-Man

Hi, I'm using Windows XP at college and the "new and improved"
Find command is giving me fits. I spent four minutes
waiting for it to search for a folder, and I eventually
abandoned the search. I am not a happy camper here.

Previous threads in this newsgroup seemed to indicate that
there is no acceptable replacement for this piece of crap.
I refuse to believe that, however.

I want to know what is the best alternative.

"YoKenny" ...
I was a devout Agent Ranshack user but after
seeing TrackerV3 I am impressed.

Seconded.

I did a small test searching for a phrase inside pdf-files, using Agent
Ransack, TrackerV3 and the built-in search in Windows XP.

The only one that gave a correct result was TrackerV3!

Agent Ransack resulted in files that didn't contain the phrase, while
Windows XP search didn't find any files at all...

I found this common when I first switch to XP, been using Agent Ransack ever
since, but will try Tracker V3. Thanks for the info.

After furthering searching through the ACF archives, someone
found a utility named File Finder from Mijenix Corp at

www.shellfront.org/utils (listed as Find.zip).

I downloaded it, and it has a pretty similar interface to
the Win 98 Find window I am so used to using. Performance-wise,
it may not be the best, but I'm pretty happy with it. I may even
start using it at home sometimes.

For what it's worth, I've been using Agent Ransack for over a year, and
thought I was pleased with it. After reading about TrackerV3, I decided to
try it.

First, I found and removed those worthless 0KB files that are saved when you
surf the net. I then searched, again, for the same sized files. Agent
Ransack found 146 files. TrackerV3 found 3066.

Obviously, there is some kind of difference in what they look in.
