Need WinXP shutdown process logger.

Does anyone know of a freeware program which will monitor and log
process activity during shutdown? I'm having a recurring problem when
shutting down or rebooting Windows XP Pro; the shutdown stalls because
some program seems to be trying to write or find something on my CD-RW
drive. The drive spins up and down repeatedly and seemingly will
continue to do so forever until I finally have to do a hard reset to
stop it. This doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be a real
nuisance, and frequently the CD file system becomes corrupted during
the power-off. Ideally, I would like to find a utility which will log
all activity during Windows shutdown, and which is designed to be the
last program closed by Windows, so that I can identify the culprit.

I don't have a freeware to recommend, but perhaps you might try
disabling your AV scanner (C-A-D and end task to make sure that it is
good and dead) before shutting down and see if that helps.
Alternatively, you could make a point of removing any recordable media
prior to shutdown.

HTH.

What a fascinatingly Microsoftian response from someone whose sig
proclaims an anti-Microsoft philosophy! Like MS, you are saying, "We
acknowledge that you have an issue, but we have no fix for it.
However, here is a work-around you can try". I appreciate your
suggestions, and I already eject my CD tray before shutdown when I
remember to, but I would rather try to solve the problem than continue
to take what should be unnecessary extra steps to avoid it.

Microsoftian problem warrants Microsoftian solution.

My apologies. I will immediately issue you refund.
I appreciate your suggestions,

Yes, that's obvious. Remember to fill out a comment card -- I'm drawing
for a toaster oven at the end of the week.
and I already eject my CD tray before shutdown when I remember to,

Who's the idiot who gave you *that* shitty advice?
but I would rather try to solve the problem than continue to take what

That's funny. "Try" is what I thought I was doing, too. May I suggest
using your refund to buy a new attitude?

Have a perfectly horrible day.

Maybe BootLog : http://www.stefanlautenbach.de/code/bootlog_about.htm

BootLog logs the boots, shutdowns and crashes of Windows.

Boolog.exe makes a login entry in a log file when Windows boots and
during a regular shut down it makes a logout entry. If Windows crashes
there will not be any logout entry written in the log file, so BootLog
can calculate the crash time based on the next login entry.

BootLogV.exe analyses the log file and generates some diagrams with
useful information for instance about the system stability.

Installation
extract the zip files in one new folder
start 'BootLog.exe -install'

Maybe also SysInternals FileMon or even RegMon can be of help, perhaps
in a work-around way, don't really know. http://www.sysinternals.com

Have you tried running Regseeker to clean all references in your
registry that have no target out?

I know little about XP registries, except that they can be huge.

Regseeker works really well for 98SE. I did an aggressive cleanup with
no problems, and the cleanups can be backed up and restored in case
things don't work out.
