Can someone please advise me how I can uninstall Microsoft security patch
#911280. I apparently have an obsolete version on the patch that is
preventing me from making a dial-up connection from an old laptop.

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down the list to the item of
interest/concern. Double-click on it and select "remove".

Thanks David, but this does not help. The security patch is not a program,
so it does not show up on that list. The patch is likely a file that is
buried somewhere within a Windows application folder -- but I don't know
which one and don't know how to locate it. I tried a search for the number
911280, but got no result.

Thanks again.

You didn't find what you were looking for because it's in a hidden
folder, use the Tools | Folder Options | View Tab | Show hidden files
and folders and you will find it.

After you unhide the folder you should find
C:\WINNT\$NtUninstallKB911280$\spuninst . Launch spuninst.exe in that
folder.

According to my system, 911280 was a regular update that replaced seven
system files. It has an uninstall folder D:\WINNT\$NtUninstallKB911280$
and their should be a matching entry in Add/Remove programs. If that
entry is missing, you can uninstall by double-clicking the spuninst.inf
file in \WINNT\$NtUninstallKB911280$\spuninst. If the uninstall folder is
missing from WINNT, you're out of luck unless you have it on a backup.

Program or not, it does show up in my <Add/Remove Programs> along with
all the other patches/fixes.

It's one of the items listed as "Windows 2000 Hotfix"

If you, by chance, removed the uninstall files, as some do for the sake
of room, go find and reinstall it and then it should show in Add/Remove
Programs to uninstall, or by finding the folder and executing the .inf
file.

If all else fails and you have no other choice, do a Repair install and
then you will need to do SP4 again and a Windows update to install all
of your hotpatches and then you should find it in your Add/Remove
Programs. A lot of trouble, but it can be done.
