Sam

I just had a friend who talked to Microsoft and they said
we can install Windows XP on more than one computer and
can do the activation without problems. He said we would
not have a problem putting it on one PC then another and
activate it normally. Well, this is not what I have
learned. I have only learned one copy per machine.

Now, I'm confused and need to talk to a MVP or perhaps
call Microsoft myself and get all the details. I don't
want be doing anything illegal, but if we can install XP
on another machine and be safe then that's great. Please
respond or give me a number to call on this issue or
something.

Whenever you have a question regarding the Windows XP
End User License Agreement (EULA), its best to go ahead
and read the EULA itself.

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter.

Your license to use Windows XP permits you to
install one copy of Windows XP on one computer.
A second installation of Windows XP, installed on
another computer, will require another license.

In order to successfully activate Windows XP for the second
installation, you'll need to purchase a second license (Product Key).
The Windows XP license agreement only permits one installation
of Windows XP on one computer with each Product Key.

Also, open XP's "Help and Support" and type: EULA
and click on "Questions and Answers about the
End-User License Agreement".

To purchase an additional Windows XP license, visit:

Additional Licenses for Windows XP Home Edition
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.asp

Additional licenses for Windows XP Professional
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/addlic.asp

P.S. The "retail version" of Microsoft Office XP or 2003 does
permit installing a copy of Office on a desktop and a notebook
computer using the same Product Key. This is not the case with
the Windows XP operating system.

Sam;
Retail Microsoft Office normally allows installation on a desktop and
a laptop used by the same person.
Windows XP Home or Professional as with all other consumer Microsoft
OSs is still one license, one computer the way it has always been.
Read the EULA for details
Start/Run
Type "winver" ENTER
Click "End User License Agreement"
Note: The reference to 2 processors refers to a single computer
having a maximum of 2 processors and not allowing installation on 2
computers.

Your friend LIETH! He is also full of s--t! :-(

Greetings --

Your friend was either told something that was incorrect,
misunderstood what he _was_ told, or lied to you. I'm not casting
aspersions or making a judgment here; just listing the possibilities.
Just look at the box WinXP came in; does it not clearly say that it's
for use only on a single PC? Does not the EULA, to which you must
agree during installation, say the same thing, in plain English?

As it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating systems,
it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and copyright
laws, if not technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each
computer on which it is installed. The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft
mechanism, Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more
difficult) the sort of multiple installations you're asking about.

Sam,

The "advice" you have been given is partially correct from a certain point
of view.
It is possible your friend did not make his intentions clear to the person
he talked to.
You may only install your single licensed copy on one PC.
If you want to have it on 2 PC then you need to buy 2 copies.
If you wish to take it off one PC and put it on another such as if your old
machine is retired or sold and you buy a new one.
This requires that you completely remove it from the old machine before you
install it on a new machine and that you are using a retail copy not an OEM
one. (A retail copy comes from your local PC software store and comes in a
big blue or green box for Pro or Home respectively.)

I hope that makes it all clear to you now.
