Windows XP freezes after loading. Upon viewing the error log and searching for help, I believe that I need to repair the insallation. But I do not have an XP disk. It did not come with my computer purchased at a small local computer dealer.

Frank.

Contact your "local computer dealer" - they MUST either provide you with an
OEM CD ROM or a method of resorting Windows XP to as shipped from them .
This is a requirement of their OEM agreement with Microsoft to distribute
Windows XP.
If they used a Retail version they MUST give you the Retail media.

Without a xp cd you really werent given a total package. The cd
is critical for running all kinds of cmds. Go back to dealer for cd w/o it
youre troubles are just begining.

I will try, but I don't think they are in the computer business any
longer.

Frank,

In which case you may be required to purchase an Retail Windows XP CD.
You also need to check to ensure you are actually licensed to use Window XP
if you have no Certificate of Authority (COA) or Media.

How can I tell if I have a Certificate of Authority. I suppose the copy was registered. I get the updates.

Frank,

If you did not get the media and the appropriate paper work - licenses,
product activation key on a yellow sticker and a possibly a COA affixed to
the PC - you may not have actually purchased Windows XP in a properly
licensed manner and thus may be using a "pirated" copy.

There is a WindowsXP OEM stickeron the side of my computer.

In which case your OEM must provide some way of restoring the device to as
shipped form production. This does not mean a CD and may be a hidden
recovery partition etc.

The dealer is working on it, but I would rather have the disk and do it myself. It took 4 days for them to get to it and I think they are going to do a complete reinstall.
