I have 2 notebooks, both running xp home. i have a
crossover cable as well. i need to network them together.
the network wizard assures me that everything went
smoothly when all is said and done, but there's still no
network! i have no clue where to go for answers.
microsoft website refuses to give me phone numbers but
their knowledge base keeps trying to refer me to things i
can't do (like, "click on such and such link" when it's
not even an option on my screen) and i'm getting fed up
with microsoft and their products as well. I seem to
remember paying for this stuff when i got the computers.

Any help would rule. I'm becoming bitter and disgruntled

upgreade to xp-pro. home donot allow networking

Yes, XP Home Edition does allow networking. There's no need for XP
Pro.

These tips should help get everything working:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
