I am trying to document what I think was the process for installing
windows xppro on a second
ATA Hard Drive on the same mach windows vista home basic is already
installed on a SCSI drive and being able to dual boot. Below is what I have
from memory. I have it working properly but took alot of internet searches
and trials. When I finally succeeded I tried to doccument what I did! Here
is what I have so far:



1. After install of windows xppro on ATA hard drive: Start
windows xppro and open folder options, view: change to show hidden files,
uncheck Hide protected operating system files.

2. Open my computer: Copy and paste files from
root directory: ntldr, NTDETECT, and boot.ini to second drive root
directory with other operating system on it.

3. Reboot system with Vista DVD and do repair start up and
ths should allow Vista to start instead of XPPro.

4. Restart computer and run VistaBootPro 3.3 and add
WinXPPro to operating systems.

5. Reboot and you have option which operating system to
run!





Could someone tell me if this is correct? Any input would be appreciated! If
more details are needed please add to in your responce! Thank you for any
input in advance!
 
Hi, Jim.

Dual-booting in systems with drives that use different interfaces (ATA,
SATA, SCSI, etc.) can get very tricky! Much of the "trickery" is in the
motherboard BIOS. With SCSI, you may also need to deal with the SCSI BIOS.
And your mobo/chipset/BIOS may be one that uses SCSI to also refer to SATA
or some other non-PATA interface. :>(

What is the make and model of your computer, or of the mobo/chipset/BIOS if
you built it yourself? And the make and model of your hard drives,
including which interface. Are you using a Promise or other add-on hard
drive interface card?

Every mobo is different, so yours is probably different from my EPoX
MF570sli. Mine comes with the usual 2 PATA channels, plus 2 SATA
connectors, plus 4 more SATA connectors on an optional controller. The BIOS
lets me choose any of the drives to be the boot device. It also lets me
press Esc during POST to choose a different boot device for the current boot
only, reverting to the BIOS setting for later restarts.

Windows XP and Vista are each installed in two parts. The largest part goes
to wherever we tell Setup to put it, which can be any primary partition or
logical drive on any HDD in the computer. But we have no direct control
over where Setup puts the few critical startup files. They always go to the
System Partition, which is the Active (bootable) partition on whichever HDD
is designated in the BIOS as the boot device at the time we run Setup. So,
even if we install Vista into the 3rd logical drive on the second physical
drive, its startup files (bootmgr and the hidden \Boot folder) will go to
the first physical drive, if that is the current boot device.

So watch the BIOS settings or you may be repairing the startup files on your
SCSI drive, then rebooting from your ATA drive - or vice versa.
