Hello,

All of my programs were not being recognized on my PC. I
believe I got one of the recent viruses. I decided to
reinstall the operating system and at the same time
upgrade from my current MS2000 to XP.

Ater file installation, the system booted to a screen
that said there was a problem and XP could not start. I
had a few options including going to Safe Mode, and going
to Safe Mode With a Command Prompt. These options do not
work, the system repeatedly returns me to a STOP Screen
with a long error code. I tried booting directly from
the CDROM containing the XP disk. It also will not work.

I am willing to reformat the drive, but I cannot get to a
DOS prompt to initiate the command. Can anyone help with
ideas??

Boot into your BIOS and set the CD_ROM drive to boot before the hard drive
does.
Then install your XP CD and reboot.
All the tools are there for Partitioning, Formatting and Installation.

Squire,

Thanks for the info.

Is what you are suggesting different than responding to
a "Press any Key to Boot from CDROM" message, which
displays during the boot process.

I did this a few times with the XP disk in the CDROM.
The system displayed a blue screen and starting loading a
bunch of files with names displayed on the bottom of the
screen. After a few minutes the message at the bottom of
the screen said "Starting Windows" . The system hung at
that point.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi, Doug,

Sorry to be late on the reply,
The press any key to boot from the CD, is correct and it starts loading
setup files.
You can follow the screen prompts to determine what you need.
Go all the way thru the different screens until you get to the EULA
agreement and Install Windows.
At this point you can decide to delete or create partitions, format and
install windows.

Doug, I forgot to tell you,
If you have an OEM disk instead of a Retail version of XP, you can only
install as a clean, new install, you cannot upgrade.
