Hi, I have old files that I need to remove from my registry as they are
interfering with my AV program. How do I do this?? I understand that it's
easy to mess up the registry and I don't want to do that.

I'm using Windows XP Home edition.

Any assistance is appreciated! Thanks!

Hi:

Spybot Search & Destroy.. will take care of it
one of it's features is to delete unasociated
registry keys.

Spybot Search and Destroy (Free)

Once you have cleaned the registry, it's a good
idea to back it up in case you ever damage it.
it takes about 50MB to back it up.

In the registry right click on My PC\Export
select where to save the backup preferably
in a private folder and don't touch it unless
you are ready to restore the whole registry

MSCanuck,

You are right, registry editing can damage your system quite badly if you do
it wrong. Thats why it is important to completely understand exactly what
you are doing. Below is a collection of links which have some details on
What the Registry is, How it's used and how to edit it. Please make sure
you feel 100% confident before you do any editing. And always use an
alternative where possible, (what old files are interfering?).

Apparently the Symantec folder in my registry may be interfering with my
McAfee VirusScan. I did remove Norton AV through add/remove programs quite a
while ago.

Thank you for the links! I will be 100% sure that I know what I'm doing
before editing the registry.

What do you think about using Spybot? Wouldn't that just detect "bad" keys?
Symantec isn't bad, just not welcome in my registry.
