Need to "dumb-down" Word

Is there a way to turn off all of Word 2003's automatic features so it
does only what I tell it to do without trying to anticipate what I want?

I'm reworking a document that's the product of several people, all
having their own ways of doing things. It's far too long to redo from
scratch and Word's "assistance" is making more work.
