I have a legal copy of Windows XP Home Edition. I had to wipe out my
computer. However, when I go to install Windows it gets to 90% done and
then gives me error the file cannot be copied and that this is not a valid
image of Windows or if using a CD there is a problem with your CD. I can
pres ESC to get passed it and sometimes it will copy the next file but then I
will get the error again on another file. I am assuming my CD is bad. I
have the receipt and License. I just need another copy of the operating
system. Is there anywhere I can download this so I can burn it to another
CD?

Hello klafert. I had a similar issue with a installation CD. If you contact
the manufacturer or vendor wher you purchased the system, they should be able
to supply you with a replacement usually with only a S & H charge. I do not
believe that you can download the actual operating system. I know that Dell
does provide replacement operating system CDs for their products.

Try taking it to a place that cleans up CDs. Do other CDs work in the
optical drive? If you have a friend with XP Home and it's the same
version as yours (generic OEM or retail), you can use his or her CD with
your product key. You can also copy his or her CD for later use.

The others have given you good information about replacing the CD. However,
I would not make the assumption as you did that the CD is bad without
testing.

Problems installing an operating system (and you didn't tell us why you
"wiped out" your computer) are normally caused by bad hardware.

1. Bad CD installation media - test in another computer.

2. Bad optical drive - swap out for a known-working one.

3. Bad hard drive - test with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the hard
drive mftr. If the drive tests bad, replace it.

4. Bad RAM - test with Memtest86+ from www.memtest.org.

As Alias stated, try cleaning it first. Check the underside and see if
there are a lot of scratches or just fingerprints. Google search how to
clean a cd.

I had an XP install on a Mac last week that was giving off errors that
it couldn't read files repeatedly. I cleaned the CD and tried again and
it completed, even though it hardly looked dirty.

Not legitimately.

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer.

Get yourself a Bit Torrent client:
http://www.utorrent.com/download.php

Then choose the version you have the CD key for---

OEM version:
<http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4577097/Windows_XP_Home_SP2_[OEM_Edition]>

Retail Version:
<http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/440...dition_with_Service_Pack_3_Retail_(x86)_(TPB)>

And then don't forget to get several anti-malware utilities to clean up
any and all files obtained from such a highly suspect source.

That is always a possibility, yes.

That being said, I'm sure the actual .iso files *are* out there. One way
to determine if you have the real McCoy is to perform a checksum. As a
public service, the following info should be useful:

XP Generic OEM w/ SP2
Label: VX2HOEM_EN
MD5: 8dd80a25d097335ee985f840cccd3ae5
SHA1: bd8d01369023662f18c2b419e51617269b1ba021

XP Generic OEM w/ SP3
Label: GRTMHOEM_EN
MD5: db34a933ad23114be2e6a4553b61eb77
SHA1: 93683dbbb16b23d8be6c409b96c76cd903347259

For those who have the proper license (Product Key), if you do find the
actual .iso files (run a program like Hash Calc to verify!), use a
program like CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn to create your CD. And if you can
find both versions of XP, you might as well use the SP3 version.
