Completed SP2 upgrade of XP Pro successfully. I'm using
McAfee firewall, antivirus, etc., so I disabled Windows
Firewall. I also disabled automatic updates.

Now, every time I reboot, I get Windoes Security Center
icon in system tray with a stupid bubble notice re:
risk. I have searched high & low on my PC, but I cannot
find how to remove this from the system tray or executing
on boot.

Please advise how to disable this stupid notice.

Hi

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way Security
Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

If this setting is reset at each reboot, do the following:

Start Regedit.exe and create new entries under

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Security Center

DWORD Value: FirewallDisableNotify
Value Data: 1

DWORD Value: UpdatesDisableNotify
Value Data: 1

If that doesn't stick when you reboot, do the following:

Someone in another newsgroup thread indicated that a Symantec service
was the cause for this behavior on his computer (I can't remember in
what newsgroup though).

To "solve" this problem, disable the Security Center service:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.

There is also a Group Policy setting available to disable the
Security Center (Start/Run--> gpedit.msc).

Take a look at the chapter for the Security Center in
06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC

What settings are added or changed in Windows XP Service Pack 2?
Group Policy settings (page 26 for me)

06_CIF_Maintenance.DOC ("Changes to Functionality in Microsoft Windows XP
Service Pack 2, Part 6: Computer Maintenance") can be downloaded from here:

Hi Torgeir,

Aren't they per-computer setting. I've not tried it cloning to HKCU yet. But
Regmon reveals:

SetValue HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify
SetValue HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify
SetValue HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify

Hi

This part of my post will set those values in HKLM:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way Security
Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

But many experience that the above doesn't survive a reboot, Rock have
posted that creating the value(s) in HKCU might work better:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=uk4S#[email protected]

And as I wrote, if even that doesn't help on the re-enabling after
boot issue, disabling the Security Center service is a sure way to
shut it up ;-)

Thanks Torgier -- deselecting the three items on "Change
the way security center notifies me" works like a charm!

Thanks, Torgeir.

Update:
Just tried in HKCU area and sec center did not take those settings. Again,
R'Mon din't query for HKCU Security Center.

Well Jackson, yes & no. Simply turning off the notifications does not
disable the program (as the 'security center' help file makes clear). If it
shows up in the system tray, it is still sucking up cycles: it just does not
show any notices.

The best/easiest way to actually get rid of the beast is to use, as Torgeir
Bakken also suggested, 'services' to keep it from loading.

I'm not sure whether Jonathan meant to answer this, but since he didn't
post anything:

Open to the Security Center applet in Control Center. Look on the left
side and you will see a link that says, "Change how Security Center
alerts me". Click on it and uncheck the boxes next to the alerts you
don't want to get (all). Apply and OK out. No more alerts.

I have not installed SP2, but I get the same message as below. There is no
listing for the Security Center in my Control Panel. How can I disable this
annoying message?
