Need to convert 'File' types

I have downloaded several movies from my camera. Some of them ended up as
'Files' instead of 'Video Clips'. Can anyone help me convert these to a
common supported format in my editing software (Video Impression 2, Windows
MovieMaker) so I can edit them?

video clips are files....
How did you capture these?
Did you capture them all at the same time?
Have you checked to see what sort of file type they are?
Are they the same as the video clips?
Is this a camera or camcorder?
Lots of camera movie files are very compressed and need converting before
use, you can google for file.*** to avi convertors.
You may be seeing the data that cameras save as well as the movie files.

All of the video are from my CF digital camera . They were captured at many
different times, and I probably downloaded them 2 different ways (ie. through
VideoImpression versus 'Copy to Folder' through My Computer). When I try to
open the 'files' it always asks what program to use. I can then open and play
them in Media Player, but I cannot play them in an editing program
(unsupported).

I cannot tell what kind of file they are now. In properties, the problem
movies show 'read-only file' (they're currently on discs.) versus 'Video
Clips, opens with MediaPlayer, read-only'. Almost all filenames have been
renamed except for a few and they show, for example, MVI_144, with no
extension, varying between file and video clip.

Thanks for your input so far. How can I decipher the file type?

Thanks Graham for all your help. You led me to my solution. For all who may
be interested, here it is...

I opened each file in MediaPlayer, hit 'save as' and kept the same filename
and everything, but I added an extension of 'avi'.

Worked like a charm. Now comes the really hard part, editing every movie I
have (of my daughter's first year) and turning them into a really great DVD -
in time for Christmas!!
