Need to Change Domain

Jeff

I just connected my two home PC's together through my DSL
modem and ethernet. Old PC is running Win2k Pro and new
PC is running Win XP.

On my old PC I have enabled automatic logon. I changed
the Workgroup\Domain from WORKGROUP to HOME.

Now when I reboot the old PC, I get the message:
The system could not log you on. Make sure your User
name and domain are correct...

Any ideas how to either change my Workgroup\Domain back
to WORKGROUP or modify the auto logon to use the Domain
HOME would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

Only workgroup can auto logon but not domain.

To change back to workgroup, log in as administrator and
disjoint from the domain or disable the auto login.

Thanks for your reply.

The PC is still trying to auto logon after I've
disconnect it from my home network.

I did not create an administrator password so I cannot
log in as administrator.

The domain/workgroup field is not on the dialog box for
me to change.

Jeff,

open regedit and goto:
hklm\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon
you will find, defaultusername, defaultdomainname, autoadminlogon and your
password.

to disabled the autologon in the future set "autoadminlogon" to "0" or
delete this entry.

to enable the logon with the new "home" domain set "defaultdoaminname" to
the new one.
you must also set the username and password to the new ones.

cheers

Chris,

Thanks for your reply detailing what I need to do within
regedit.

I'm trying to figure out how to open regedit when I can't
logon. My disk uses the NTFS format. I've tried using
the Repair Console but that just reboots my PC and takes
me back the initial logon dialog box.

Is there another regedit product available that will work
outside of Win2k that work with an NTFS format?

As far as I know, my PC using auto logon, has a UserID of
administrator without a password for the WORKGROUP
domain. Since I changed the domain to HOME before
rebooting, I have not figured out a way to logon and get
back to regedit.

More help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jeff

You're still using a workgroup.

If you didn't create an admin password, try administrator + a blank
password.

The auto logon is using userid of administrator and a
blank password. I believe it's also tied to the original
Workgroup of WORKGROUP. Since I changed the Workgroup to
HOME I cannot logon.

Hi,

If you don't have a domain controler at home (and i'm sure you don't), the
name of your workroup doesn't matter. So you have to look for another source
for your problems.
The PC is still trying to auto logon after I've
disconnect it from my home network.

Why would it be different ?
I did not create an administrator password so I cannot
log in as administrator.

Just type "Administrator" in the username field and leave password blank, it
should work if you didn't change the Administrator account. You can try with
another account on this computer too.
The domain/workgroup field is not on the dialog box for
me to change.

This is normal because your workstation is in a workroup and then,
authentification is not based on the workgroup name

Moreover, in registry, the DefaultDomainName key is not your workgroup name
but your COMPUTER name (true only if your workstation is not a member of a
domain of course)

P.S: I'm french, sorry if my english is poor ;)

Hi Jeff,

Not sure this will help but you can bypass the Auto Logon process by holding down the
SHIFT key after Windows restarts.
