I need to buy a new printer that is known to work with RD. I have a remote
user that is having a lot of trouble getting existing printers to work
consistently. What printer works simply w/o issue with RD? Inexpensive is
preferred, as this will be the printers only function.

Thanks,

I'm not aware of any parallel port printer that doesn't work, if a suitable
driver is available at the host.

What host is involved in your arrangement?

Someone recently posted that, with the registry change work-around to enable
a DOT4 port to be redirected, an HP Laserjet 1012 worked fine.

This sure qualifies as cheap--both in initial cost and cost/copy. However,
you may not want to have to manage the registry edit to allow it to work.

There really isn't a lot to this--either the driver isn't available, or the
port isn't getting redirected. There was a pre-SP1 bug in Windows XP which
prevented redirection when certain antivirus apps were running, and we've
also heard that if the host is Windows Server 2003, it is important that you
be using the RD client that comes with that OS version (and is downloadable,
I believe.)

Bill do you have more information or link on this?

Well a search on this group on the term "1012" should find the message from
the participant that reported success with this printer.

The registry change needed is detailed here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q302361

I would recommend rebooting the client PC (where you make this registry
change) before testing.

The driver for the printer, of course, must be available at the host.

That's the reason I asked what machine was hosting this connection--the
requirements for a printer driver on a server may be quite different from
one on an XP Pro workstation.

Shouldn't be a problem then.

If you don't want to have the remote user go through the registry edit, then
stick with parallel port printers. These are probably an endangered
species, though--I wonder if MS will change the default mask to include the
USB ports in some future version of Windows?

On Servers, the best advice is to stick with drivers that shipped with the
server OS, and write custom INF files to connect a compatible driver to the
newer printer. Not a real simple process, but not too difficult, either.

Hi, Dan:

I recommend the Brother HL-1440 printer to my clients and for th
most part this works great! Just make sure they use the printer cabl
and NOT a USB Cable. I also suspect that the Brother HL-5140 (whic
offers more memory for only $20 more) would work just as well!
