I'm having weird problems with my new hp scanjet 4890 and FineReader.

In order to troubleshoot them I need to find a different program that can do
custom page size scans through twain and/or WIA.

Every thing I've found doesn't. It either just does standard paper sizes
(Letter, A4, etc) or it calls the HP software through twain and doesn't
actually use the custom page size commands.

What is happening is that through WIA the scanner is returning a Letter
sized scan no matter what size is requested. The margin offsets are
respected but not the paper size.

Through Twain it works most of the time, but occasionally it returns a
garbage scan.

The scan is either smaller than requested (in a random direction) or
rotated. Or if scanning text with the margins between the text and scan
edge set really small (less than 0.1") occasionally it will return an
"interference pattern" instead of the text. These are tied to the page
being scanned - the same page comes back like this on multiple scans. I
have to either move the page on the glass or change the color depth and/or
dpi before these pages will scan.

I need to tell if this FineReader, HP's drivers, or just my scanner that is
broken, so I need a different program that can do custom page size scans.

One of the things you can try is to scan the document with the Image editor
at 300 DPI and save the scan as a TIFF. Then open the TIFF image in
FineReader as an image to OCR.

If you get a good scan with the image editor (PhotoShop or other), then the
OCR results will be improved for difficult documents.

The "interference pattern" may be moiré and can be reduced or eliminated by
using the Descreen function. I do not know where the descreen is found in
the HP TWAIN driver, Read your help. It should be about scanning newspapers
and magazines.
