Okay, I've got two stupid little problems...
Number 1: In the past, whenever I connected to the
internet, an icon appeared in the taskbar notifing me that
I was connected. Now, the icon doesn't appear. I've
checked the taskbar properties and found that the icon is
missing. Can someone please tell me how to add items (and
remove items) to the taskbar notification list? (in case
you're wondering, I have set my taskbar to hide any
inactive icons)
Number 2: My keyboard is giving me shit. Whenever I press
more than two keys at a time, my computer beeps at me and
then the keyboard gets all screwed up. Some keys don't
work, and others are on all the time. The only way I can
solve this is to restart, but then it usually happens
again.

Thanks any help.

Go to start>connect to and right click your dial up connection and bring up
propeties. In the lower section is a check box to show icon when connected.
As for your second item. It sounds like you might have a multimedia keyboard
which needs to have an updated driver or software to work on XP properly.

I tried what you said about the taskbar, the box in the
internet properties was already checked. Sorry. And about
my keyboard, I'll look on the net for some drivers. If
anyone can help me about my taskbar, I would love to know
how to add and remove items from the taskbar notification
list! Thanks...

Sorry Paul, already tried it. The "Hide Inactive Icons"
box was already checked. And in the "Customize" menu,
there was no sign of my Internet icon. Actually I really
would like to know how to add and remove items from this
menu if you have any knowledge of how to do so...
Thanks.

That is a shame that you don't see it within the Customize button. It should be
listed there if it ever tried to put itself on the taskbar even once. I see
stuff there that has not been available since I first setup the computer (I have
network printers and there is a reference to the "Printer not attached to local
port" in the Past items list).

As far as Adding/Removing these items, active programs will put the icons there
when they are running such as RealOne, Musicmatch, ZoneAlarm, etc. To get them
out of the list, I have not explored that option yet but it would be nice to
known how to do it since I now see how much junk is in the Past Items list.

PaulM,
Thanks for the link and info. It did not quite work however. I merged the
registry file and it did remove the PastIconStream and the IconStreams keys from
the registry, but all the past items was still there. I even restarted the
computer since some of the registry keys are read only at startup. Both keys
were rebuilt.

I search the knowledge base (never got interested in finding this out before
tonight) and came across the article below:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283084
It mentions getting rid of the same two keys but also to kill the explorer
process and then restarting it. I did this and all the past items were gone.

Thanks again for putting me onto the right track.
Paul
