I'm running a LAN configuration using three Windows XP Pro computers. My
office computer is a Dell and my two remote basement systems are home-built
machines using Athlon processors in Asus A7V266-E motherboards.
Both remote computers supposedly support Wake-On-LAN (WOL) according to the
motherboard manual and the BIOS. I have tried many times to "wake up" these
systems using both Magic Packet WOL and "ping" but have never been
successfully. I now believe that the WOL problem is due to the fact that the
network card has no 5 volt "standby" power when the computer is off. This is
apparent because the two link led's are no longer lit.
Here are my questions and comments to which I would greatly appreciate some
help:
My network card is a Linksys LNE100TX. This particular model is supposed to
be WOL compliant "as long as it is plugged into a PCI slot that supports WOL
event management. (Small print on the box)
The mb manual does not mention any special PCI connector that has "standby"
power. I am also aware that some NIC cards get their standby power through a
separate 3 pin connector that goes to the motherboard. I have not tried one
of these cards because the Asus motherboard has no corresponding 3 pin
standby connector.
I believe I have set up both the bios and the NIC card correctly as well as
using the latest drivers. The motherboards are powered by a 300 W supply
which should be adequate for WOL.
