ok i formated my computer and when i try to do a windows
update it downlods the file and then says preparing
installition it stands their for like 30min with a file
thats 2mb big?? Please help me im frustrated.
 
You cannot do a Windows update on a newly formatted hard drive. You can only
do an update on a previously installed version of Windows.
 
what are u talking about i formated my computer a few
times now and installed winxp and installed the updates
with no problems so what are u telling me??

Sorry, but this is completely wrong. The requirement to use an
upgrade version is to *own* a previous qualifying version, not to
have it installed. You can indeed do a Windows upgrade on a newly
formatted hard drive; when setup doesn't find a previous
qualifying version installed, it will prompt you to insert its CD
as proof of ownership. Just follow the prompts and everything
proceeds normally and completely legitimately.
